Iowa Real Estate License: Salesperson

Requirements to Obtain a Salesperson License:

      • Be at least 18 years old
      • Complete the 60-Hour Pre-License Course
      • In addition to the 60 hours, all persons applying for a license must show evidence that they have completed the following three courses:
          • 12 Hours – Buying Practices
          • 12 Hours – Listing Practices
          • 12 Hours – Developing Professionalism and Ethical Practices
      • Schedule Iowa Salesperson Licensing Exam with PSI and pass both State and National portions of the exam
      • Undergo a background check – only valid for 120 days
      • Be sponsored by a Broker before applying for license
      • Obtain errors and omissions insurance
      • Obtain and submit the Iowa Real Estate Commission Application for Individual Licensure and be sponsored by a Broker

 

Salesperson Post-License: Requirements for First Renewal

      • All salespersons originally licensed prior to Jan. 1, 2009 that are renewing for the first time must complete the following 36 hours of education:
          • 12 Hours – Buying Practices
          • 12 Hours – Listing Practices
          • 12 Hours – Developing Professionalism and Ethical Practices

 

Salesperson Continuing Education:

      • Complete the required 36 hours during every three year renewal cycle
      • Must be completed by December 31st of the expiration year
      • The 36 hours must include 4 hours of mandated ethics and 8 hours of legal update
      • Only 24 hours may be completed via distance education

Iowa Real Estate License: Broker

Requirements to Obtain a Broker License:

      • Must have 24 months of active salesperson experience and complete 72 hours of broker pre-license education within 24 months preceding the passing of examinations.
      • Pass the state and national portions of the examination
      • Undergo a background check – only valid for 120 days
      • Provide verification of current errors and omissions insurance
      • Include current salesperson wall license with application
      • Brokers who have never renewed as a salesperson must provide documentation of attendance of the following three courses:
          • Buying Practices  – 12 Hours
          • Listing Practices – 12 Hours
          • Developing Professionalism and Ethical Practices – 12 Hours

 

Broker Continuing Education:

      • Complete the required 36 hours during every 3 year renewal cycle
      • Must be completed by December 31st of the expiration year
      • The 36 hours must include 4 hours of mandated ethics and 8 hours of legal update
      • Only 24 hours can be completed via distance education

Iowa Real Estate Examinations

      • The licensing exam costs $95.00, and includes the state and national portions.
